Why Shield Hero’s Naofumi had to save Melromarc before he left
Naofumi from The Rising of the Shield Hero had every reason to leave Melromarc, but saving him first was essential to his team’s growth.
At the beginning of Rise of the Shield Hero, the thought of other nations never crossed the minds of the summoned heroes. The land of Melromarc has made strides in keeping heroes exclusive to their territory out of selfishness. Once the other realms were revealed, you’d think Naofumi and her party would leave the ship to a more hospitable location, but they stayed.
Despite the various trials and hardships that Naofumi, Raphtalia, Filo, and Melty faced, they remained resolute in their mission to resolve the issues in Melromarc. Let’s see why and how staying in Melromarc has helped Naofumi grow as a character and fully cement her role as the Shield Hero.

Shield Hero’s video game mentality
Although Melromarc is a nation with valid problems and people who could perish if not saved during the Waves of Calamity, the legendary heroes have been summoned in video game style. They immediately received a mission, support individuals, leveling strategies, and money. Throughout the series, it’s clear that the heroes would level up by completing specific tasks or training. This showed in their stat counters and when their weapons are being upgraded.
While these tasks may not have been Naofumi’s priority, they existed enough in his mind that he attempted to level himself and Raphtalia via the Dragon Hourglass in the Church of the Three Heroes. . Sticking to the video game mentality, you’d think Naofumi would have to complete all the quests in an area to advance or level up significantly.
Corruption of the Church
The role of the Church in Rise of the Shield Hero shines light on himself when their conspiracy led to combat in Episodes 18-20. Their plot could wipe out all of the heroes and their support groups catastrophically and would have done so without Naofumi and her team’s growth and skills. With an institution that is willfully left unchecked, it could only mean an ignorance-driven disaster for the rest of the nation if they continued. Despite her initial doubts, Naofumi – and the rest of the heroes – found it essential to stay to change the level of influence of the Church as it became undeniable that they posed a threat.
Naofumi had political support
Although the King and Princess Malty opposed Naofumi and his choices on a very public level, Naofumi was not without supporters who held significant political power. The Queen of Melromarc looked after the shield hero in the shadows and supported him when she had a substantial case to present to the public. It would have been helpful if she had revealed herself and her intentions sooner, but her work led to a significant structural change in the nation and gave Naofumi and her group the opportunity to develop without any hold. hand. This gave the collective a chance to change the hearts of citizens on their own and gain supporters without outside influence.
Fitoria – the Filial Queen – also supported the Shield Hero group as she discovered that Filo would be the next queen. Although more focused on the existential crisis than on the structure of society, this political support allowed Filo to form and learn more about herself. Additionally, Fitoria put the Shield Hero on a larger mission by letting it be known that the heroes were meant to be summoned to other nations and that their cooperation was necessary for the fate of the world. Although it was not clear to Naofumi himself, his memory served to show the public that his predecessor raised Fitoria. Gaining Fitoria’s trust played a decisive role in everything that followed as she is a being of immense power invested in the group and its development.
Discrimination against demi-humans
Raphtalia’s tragic preparation for her meeting with Naofumi was something she dealt with throughout the first season. This led to them discovering and later freeing demi-humans who were enslaved and treated horribly. The liberating moment was one of significant growth at all levels for Raphtalia. Naofumi understood the importance of not only saving demi-humans but also improving their lives and made them the priority before leaving to go elsewhere. Raphtalia’s individual growth could only contribute to the group’s collective progress.
As easy as it may sound to leave Melromarc, it was not a simple decision. This move had the potential to harm thousands of people, many of whom were helping, receiving aid, or being patrons of the Shield Hero and his group. Fortunately, they stayed until the nation was structurally altered and could withstand some level of threat on its own. The collective growth of Naofumi and her team was essential, and now that they have things sorted out in Melromarc, they can continue their adventure beyond its borders.
