Police: Warje woman killed her grandmother to steal valuables to pay off loans
Hours after an elderly Warje woman was found murdered in her home with stab wounds on Tuesday night, police arrested her 24-year-old granddaughter for killing her in order to steal the money and valuables needed to repay loans. that she had taken on online credit platforms.
The deceased, Sulochana Subhash Dange (70), was found dead in her home in Akashnagar district of Warje on Tuesday evening when a neighbor came to speak to her. An FIR was registered by his granddaughter Gauri Dange (24), who works part-time in a bank’s credit card department. The victim lived in the house with his son Sunil and his granddaughter Gauri.
The granddaughter, in her statement to police, said nearly £36,000 and a gold chain and earrings from her grandmother were missing from the house. Based on the granddaughter’s initial statement, police began investigating the theft as the motive for the murder. Police also found a razor blade next to the body, believed to have been used to slit the victim’s throat and injure his hand.
Gauri told police her grandmother had been home alone since 10:30 a.m. when she and her father left home.
Chief Inspector Shankar Khatke, Warje Malwadi Police Station Officer, said: “The behavior of the granddaughter has raised suspicion. As part of our investigation, we have begun to examine the possibility of his role in the incident. The investigation revealed that Gauri had taken out a loan from an online credit platform for her expenses. To repay this loan, she had taken out a loan from another online application, etc. The heads of the loan disbursing entities had started calling him several times for the repayment of the loan. Probe suggests that Gauri suffocated her grandmother with a pillow, then inflicted injuries on her using a razor blade and screwdriver.
Officials said they suspected Gauri killed the grandmother around 10:30 a.m. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 3) Pournima Gaikwad said: “We have arrested the granddaughter for killing and robbing her grandmother. It was discovered that the granddaughter sold the gold ornaments and used the money to repay the loan.
An officer, who is part of the investigation, said Gauri lost her mother at an early age and suffered from arthritis herself. Her father also suffers from serious health problems and the grandmother suffers from asthma. Gauri began taking out loans on online platforms for family expenses, the officer said.
