Carencro PD officer credited with saving man’s life

CARENCRO, La. (KLFY) – A policeman from Carencro is recognized for having saved the life of a man. The man had a medical emergency when Officer Oren Haydel responded.
It was the morning of February 23. Vanessa Landry of Vee’s Sitter Services went to see one of her clients, Leo Williams, who is housebound. “Mr. Williams didn’t respond to the knocking and shouting at the door,” Landry said.
Landry called 911. Officer Oren Haydel rushed to the Crouchet Street home. “We both tried to knock on the door to get Mr. Williams’ attention. We couldn’t,” Haydel said. The doors were locked. The officer walked to a rear window to enter.
“I walked into the house and into Mr. Williams’ room. It was obvious that he was suffering from a serious medical episode. I immediately turned him onto his side to clear his airway and gave him first aid until the ambulance arrived,” Haydel said. “His glucose had dropped to 50. He was going into a sweet coma. He was dying. He was going to die if no one came that day,” Landry said.
In tribute to his swift actions, Vee’s Sitter Services awarded Constable Haydel a special plaque for saving Mr Williams. “I love our cops. We can call them any time of the day or night, good or bad. They put their lives on the line,” Landry said. you can see the result of your work. We don’t go into the work for the recognition, but it’s nice to get it once in a while,” Haydel said.
Haydel says any other police officer would have done the same. Mr Williams did not want to appear on camera but says he is grateful to Constable Haydel and Ms Landry for coming to the rescue.
